An increasing number of academics undertake consultancy work for government, NGOs and the private sector. Rigorous independent research assists in the decision-making process in both policy and corporate settings. Consultancy is not for everyone. It can throw out difficult ethical dilemmas relating to research. However, approached in the right way, academics can find consultancy rewarding both financially and through the impact of their work in the real world. In this session, we look at the growing markets for political and security risk analysis and strategic business intelligence, with ideas on how to obtain and perform consultancy assignments.

Michael Denison is research director at Control Risks, a leading international business consultancy. He has been special adviser to the UK foreign secretary, lecturer in International Security at the University of Leeds, and associate fellow at Chatham House. He has published widely on Central Asia, including in IISS Strategic Survey, Europe-Asia Studies, OstEuropa, World Today and for the Centre for European Policy Studies.
