The recent financial and economic crisis unravelled inherent weaknesses of the Euro and led to tensions between the core countries of the Euro zone and the beneficiaries of the common currency. Under such dire pressure, the solidarity among EU Member States has been put to a hard test. Together with the Patriotism and Progress Foundation, with the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs and with The European Commission Representation in Hungary the CEU Center for EU Enlargement Studies organises a conference in order to realistically evaluate the current state of the union and also discuss its medium term perspectives and options after the February 2013 session of the European Council.

A series of important decisions are following in the near future, such as the 2014-2020 Multi-annual Financial Framework, the first steps of implementing the road map towards a “Genuine Economic and Monetary Union”, elections of the European Parliament and of the Commission.

The speakers of the conference are high-profile European and national decision makers, prestigious scholars and members of the civil society, who discuss and debate over the present and future of the European Union and its member states. The conference also aims to inform public opinion on the critical importance of the European Union for each citizen and member state.

The opening session will be delivered by Joschka Fischer, Former Foreign Minister and Vice Chancellor of Germany and by Karel Schwarzenberg, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.
