ABSTRACT | The First World War, which reshaped Europe and the world with such drastic consequences, is usually remembered as a war between rival alliances of nations. But there was another struggle, within almost all of those countries, between those who considered the war a noble and necessary crusade, and those who felt it to be self-destructive madness, not worth the loss of millions of lives. Adam Hochschild will speak about that war within the war, as it played out in many nations, particularly in Great Britain, where the conflict between anti-war dissenters and the government was most widespread and extreme.
BIO | Adam Hochschild is an American journalist and the author of seven books. They include King Leopold’s Ghost, about the colonial conquest of the Congo; The Unquiet Ghost: Russians Remember Stalin, based on six months’ of reporting in the former Soviet Union, and To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918.
