The workshop, “A Travelogue of Central Asian Scholarship: Methods, Fieldwork, and the (Lack of) Data Deluge,” is scheduled for Dec. 8 in the Gellner Room. Organized jointly by CEU’s Asia Research Initiative and Department of International Relations and European Studies, the workshop will take stock of two decades of scholarship on post-Soviet Central Asia—a region largely off- limits to foreign scholars in Soviet times. The dissolution of the Soviet Union, the opening of certain archives, and greater possibilities for travel seemed to herald an era of easy access to local data: interviews, oral histories, surveys, and local-language media. However, research in and on Central Asia remains a painstaking exercise. Workshop contributors will shed light on how Central Asian scholarship has managed to cope with fundamental difficulties. The event is supported by the CEU 20th Anniversary Events Fund.
