"Democracy and Its Discontents. A Historical Examination of the Current Predicament of Democracy".

His talk addresses international political economy debates about comparisons of the interwar and contemporary crises of liberal democracies, which frequently focus on striking similarities in terms of the discontent with economic globalization feeding into this crisis and fueling the rise of alternative political ideologies. Professor Fetzer's paper acknowledges these similarities, but, based on a comparison between the interwar debates about economic nationalism and contemporary discourse on economic populism, it highlights key differences, in particular with regard to the crucial linkage between concerns about economic crisis, security and international order in the interwar period.
