On April 16, 2025, the American Society of International Law (ASIL) honoured Patryk I. Labuda with its inaugural International Criminal Law Scholarship Prize. The award recognizes Professor Labuda's article, “Countering Imperialism in International Law: Examining the Special Tribunal for Aggression Against Ukraine through a Post-Colonial Eastern European Lens,” published in the Yale Journal of International Law (Vol. 49, 2024, pp. 271–310).
Patryk Labuda, an Assistant Professor at the Department of International Relations at CEU, offers a novel perspective by applying a post-colonial Eastern European lens to the proposed special tribunal addressing Russia's aggression against Ukraine. His work challenges conventional narratives, emphasizing Ukraine's historical experiences of foreign domination and its unique position straddling East and West. By highlighting Ukraine's advocacy for international legal mechanisms, he underscores the potential of such tribunals to serve as vehicles for anti-imperial and counter-hegemonic efforts globally.
This recognition by ASIL not only celebrates Professor Labuda's scholarly contribution but also brings attention to the broader discourse on the role of international law in addressing acts of aggression.
Congratulations!
