Abstract | In this lecture, Iver Neumann will present discourse analysis as it has emerged from its French roots, from Emile Durkheim via Marcel Mauss and Claude Lévi-Strauss, to Michel Foucault. He will then give some examples of how it has been used within the discipline of International Relations. The final part of the lecture will discuss the relationship between discourse analysis and practice analysis.

Bio | Iver B. Neumann is Montague Burton Professor in International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an associate of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs. The second edition of his book Russia and the Idea of Europe will be published by Routledge in November 2016. With Turkologist Eiunar Wigen he is working on a book for Cambridge University Press about the Eurasian Steppe Tradition and its lingering importance of European politics.
