ABILA Book Award for a First-time Author: International Criminal Tribunals and Domestic Accountability – In the Court’s Shadow

We congratulate Assistant Professor Patryk Labuda on being awarded the ABILA Book Award for First-time Authors by the American Branch of the International Law Association.

The volume, published in June 2023,  explores the shift from international criminal tribunals (ICTs) to greater emphasis on domestic accountability for international crimes. Drawing on research in Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sierra Leone, it examines how states and tribunals cooperate, conflict, or work independently in addressing impunity. The author argues that excessive deference by ICTs to national governments can hinder accountability and enable authoritarianism, calling for reforms in ICTs and stronger collaboration with domestic systems to enhance the enforcement of international criminal law.
